Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming industries, and governments worldwide, including the UK, are developing laws to ensure its ethical and responsible use. Here are some key aspects of current and proposed AI-related legislation:
1. Data Protection Act 2018 (GDPR)
AI systems processing personal data must comply with the UK GDPR to ensure data is handled legally, transparently, and securely.
Individuals have the right to request information about how AI algorithms process their data (e.g., in automated decision-making).
Businesses deploying AI must ensure their systems do not lead to unlawful discrimination or profiling.
2. AI Accountability Framework (Proposed)
The UK government is working on a framework to regulate AI across sectors. Key proposals include:
Transparency: Companies must disclose when decisions are made by AI and provide explanations for those decisions, especially in sensitive areas like recruitment, healthcare, and finance.
Bias Prevention: Organisations must prove their AI systems are free from discriminatory biases and conduct fairness audits regularly.
Safety Measures: Developers are responsible for ensuring their AI systems are robust, reliable, and safeguarded against misuse or cyberattacks.

Mandatory Testing: Ensuring rigorous testing for AI systems before deployment in high-stakes environments.
Enforcement Mechanisms: Regulators such as the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) will enforce penalties for non-compliance.
Example of AI in Use
Scenario: A recruitment company uses AI to shortlist job candidates. However, the system unintentionally excludes applicants with gaps in their CVs, disproportionately impacting women who have taken maternity leave.
Risks:
Violates anti-discrimination laws under the Equality Act 2010.
Breaches GDPR if the algorithm's decision-making process is not transparent.
Resolution: The company must audit and update its AI system to remove biases, provide human oversight, and allow candidates to appeal AI decisions.
